⭐ Why It Matters
The Hobbit is the foundation of modern fantasy. With its timeless structure, lyrical world-building, and themes of courage and greed, it introduced generations of readers to Middle-earth. It’s often taught at the KS3 level and in early secondary school due to its readability, symbolism, and impact on the fantasy genre.

📚 Plot Summary
🔹 The Unexpected Journey Begins
Bilbo Baggins lives a peaceful life in Bag-End until Gandalf arrives, followed by a band of 13 dwarves. They’re on a quest to reclaim their ancestral treasure from Smaug, the dragon who occupies Erebor, the Lonely Mountain.
Reluctantly, Bilbo joins them as their “burglar”.
🔹 Perils Along the Way
Their journey is filled with dangers and trials:
- Trolls nearly cook them alive
- Elves of Rivendell help them with ancient maps
- In the Misty Mountains, Bilbo gets separated from the group and encounters Gollum, winning the One Ring in a game of riddles
- They are captured by goblins, then saved by Gandalf
- Wargs and eagles intervene during a wild forest escape
- In Mirkwood, they face giant spiders, elvish imprisonment, and worsening tensions
Bilbo begins to grow in bravery and cleverness, increasingly earning the dwarves’ respect.
🔹 Smaug & The Lonely Mountain
The group finally reaches the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo sneaks into Smaug’s lair and steals a cup, awakening the dragon.
He discovers Smaug’s weak spot — a bare patch in his chest — which he passes along. Smaug flies off in fury to destroy Lake-town (Esgaroth), where he’s killed by Bard the Bowman.
🔹 The Arkenstone, the Siege, and the Battle
Thorin grows obsessed with finding the Arkenstone, a family heirloom, and refuses to share the treasure with Bard and the people of Lake-town.
Unbeknownst to Thorin, Bilbo has secretly taken the Arkenstone, hoping to use it to broker peace.
When dwarves, men, and elves come to claim shares of the treasure, a battle nearly erupts, but is interrupted by the arrival of goblins and wargs.
In the ensuing Battle of the Five Armies, Thorin, Fili, and Kili are killed. Thorin makes peace with Bilbo before dying.
🔹 Ending – Home Again
Bilbo declines most of the treasure and returns to the Shire — only to find himself declared dead, his belongings auctioned off.
Though he returns to his quiet life, Bilbo is forever changed — no longer the same timid hobbit who left.
🧠 Themes & Takeaways
